Instagram DM CLI Mode (“the Extension”) restyles Instagram Direct as a minimal, text-first CLI interface.

Data handled

When CLI mode is enabled, the Extension locally processes:

• Participant display names, usernames or profile paths, and avatar URLs when present
• Conversation previews, message text, sender context, timestamps, and current draft text
• Instagram Direct page text, links, thread identifiers, media-element presence, and the current Direct route
• Conversation-selection clicks, wheel and scroll positions, relevant navigation keys, and input events required to operate the interface

The Extension does not access passwords, cookies, authentication tokens, payment information, health information, location data, or Chrome browsing history.

How data is used

This data is used only to render and operate the CLI inbox and conversation interface, synchronize it with Instagram’s existing controls, maintain the current page’s navigation and scroll position, and display the user’s current draft.

Storage and retention

Only two display preferences are stored in chrome.storage.local: whether CLI mode is enabled and the selected Paper or Terminal theme.

Conversation participants, thread identifiers, messages, drafts, and page content are not persistently stored. They remain only in the current page’s memory and are discarded when the page is reloaded or the tab is closed.

Transmission and sharing

The Extension has no developer-controlled server, analytics, telemetry, advertising, or data-broker integration. It does not independently transmit user data to the developer or other third parties.

When a user intentionally sends a message, Instagram’s existing website and services perform that transmission. The Extension does not create a separate message-delivery channel.

User data is not sold, used for advertising, used to determine creditworthiness, or made available for human review.

Permissions and remote code

The storage permission is used only for the two display preferences described above. Access is limited to https://www.instagram.com/direct/*.
